Two local ladies are mixing it up this weekend in Wellington Village! Laura Twiss and Tonia Weber handcraft women’s ready-to-wear pieces and from March 21-24 they are showcasing their creations at a transformed “pop up shop” located at 1304 Wellington Street West.

Laura and Tonia pride themselves on creating unique clothes that are stylish, modern and flattering for women of all shapes and sizes. Their inspiration comes from their favourite musicians, fashion icons and childhood friends. To them, great fashion doesn’t have to be complicated. I couldn’t agree more! Another super-cool thing: they offer sewing lessons at their permanent boutique, located at 177 Armstrong Street in Hintonburg.

Check it out ladies! Runs until March 24.

Happy Shopping!

Things to be excited about: New businesses

Tags

Here are some exciting new businesses opening in the area this spring. Some are actually already opened:

Byward Market News and Toy Soldier Market

Couldn’t find any information for them online, but I’ve been wanting a news shop since the one that used to be next to the Herb and Spice shut down, more so since Collective Works is now gone. Looking forward to this great addition!

Elmdale Oyster House & Tavern

I will be eating lots of oysters here…Here is a more extensive look at the work they’ve been doing, click here. Also you can follow their twitter for updates.

A pharmacy

Again, no info online. I wonder if their proximity to the Rexall will be an issue.

They are moving from their Bank street location to Wellington West! Should be a great addition.

Richard’s Hintonburg Kitchen

Juniper’s Richard Nigro is opening this great looking grab and go cafe/kitchen. All I can say is…yum!

Did I miss anything? What are you excited about? I’ll be home April 16th to check out all these great places in person!!

New business: illume espresso bar

The anticipation is over, a new locally owned espresso bar, illume, opened its doors today. Located right across from the Metro, on the ground floor of the new condo building, illume is a great, cozy alternative to the Bridgehead further down the street. We had vanilla lattes, presented beautifully, which tasted amazing. While I am a die hard Bridgehead fan, I think illume is well situated (not too close to any other coffee shops) and offers a product that is unique and different. I look forward to returning!

Westboro / West Wellington Holiday Shopping Guide: Part 1

Tags

Hey lovelies. I was inspired by Jezebel’s often hilarious Holiday Gift Guides, so I thought I would put together my own holiday shopping guide, specifically for the areas of Westboro / West Wellington and Hintonburg. I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses, and what better time to do so then around the holidays when, no matter what you’re celebrating exactly, it’s safe to say you will probably do some shopping at some point.

This Part 1 is very simple, I wanted to highlight the Urban Craft Market which is happening tomorrow, Saturday, December 1st at the GCTC. The next one will be in January, so make the effort to start your holiday shopping early and attend. I posted about it last year, you can check out the post for more pictures here.

Local Tourist Ottawa did a great in-depth look at Urban Craft, you can read it here for more information about how the market came to be developed and the people behind its success.

I don’t get home until the 4th so I’m disappointed I won’t be able to attend. But check it out if you haven’t already, it’s always amazing, and a great place to support local vendors.

Keep your eyes peeled for Part 2 in the next few weeks.

Westboro Handmade Kilts

My friend Alan Dempsey is pretty much the only solid friend I made during my Undergraduate degree at Carleton in Greek and Roman Studies. We spent many hours drinking before Latin class at Mike’s place, which needless to say wasn’t the best idea. You may remember Alan from my Halloween 2011 post. Anyways! Alan, from Scottish heritage, has started a side business making handmade kilts from his Westboro home:

From his Etsy shop: “Handmade kilt from Wool/Rayon blend. Perfect for everyday wear and semi-formal occasions.
This kilt is a “modern” kilt. It rests on the hips just like a pair of pants for a more comfortable and casual feel.
The kilt fastens by means of belt (not provided) on the outside. The inner apron is held in place with velcro for quick adjustments.
The rear pocket is perfect for wallet and/or phone. It can be placed on left or right side.

Take a second and check out his Etsy shop, or send him an e-mail at Adempsey10@gmail.com if you’re interested.

My recent Dip Dye experiences: Purple / blue and Green

Tags

So my first Dip Dye post still receives a lot of hits, and I’ve noticed so many lovely women rocking the dip dye look these days. I’ve actually noticed it a ton in BC, almost more than Ottawa. Either way, I’ve been playing around few a few colours recently and I thought I would show them here.

First, I got my hair dyed ombre before I flew out to BC. I got it done at the lovely Character Hair Salon in Hintonburg:

However, back tracking. Before I dyed it ombre, I wanted to try purple. I used Manic Panic in Ultra Violet:

Above is how it looked over my natural brown.
And this is how it looked over my blonde:
Excuse the ridiculousness, I took this photo weeks ago not intending to post it. BUT as you can see, it came out much more blue than purple. I enjoyed it, it was just different than what I was expecting.
After playing around with purple / blue / red I wanted to try something different. I really want to rock teal ends, and I know Manic Panic makes a teal. However when I went to Shoppers, instead of carrying my stand by Manic Panic, they had Jerome Russell’s Punky Colour, a product I’ve never tried before. I settled with Apple Green:
This is how it looked on my blonde tips:
I got a lot of compliments, but I wasn’t super pleased with it. The best / worst part is, the above photo is from November 6th, and the green is STILL THERE, despite me literally scrubbing it with shampoo. That’s good because the Manic Panic required re-dying almost every week to keep up the vibrancy. SO I highly recommend Punky Colour, check out their website if you are unfamiliar.
I’m waiting for the green to completely go away before I move on to my next dying project, but I have a few ideas in mind that I will post here when they are done.
I fly back to Ottawa on Tuesday, and I can’t wait! Except I don’t have any winter boots, I’ve been rocking Tom’s here all fall (oh no I’m turning into a BC hipster…)

I’m Alive!

Wow

My last post was from the summer. So basically, I’ve moved to Victoria, BC, getting my MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Victoria. I was attempting to start a blog for my time there, but it’s proving difficult. I’m coming back to Ottawa soon for a month for the holidays, and I’m hoping to post some new content on this blog, and possibly start featuring street fashion of Victoria after I go back. We will see.

Thank you to any new twitter or blog followers, I really appreciate you taking interest in the site and I promise you when my life makes a little more sense, content will become  regular.

Thank you to anyone who has e-mailed me about Ottawa fashion related or Westboro/West Wellington related events, I miss the lovely fashion scene Ottawa has going on. If you are interested in me covering anything that is happening between December 5th and January 6th, please send an e-mail to ottawawestfashion@hotmail.ca and I’ll do my best to attend.

That’s it for now. Hopefully more later.

PS My Booster Juice on Wellington closed, wtf! Worked there for almost 5 years, RIP free smoothies.

Westfest 2012!

Tags

, , , , , , ,

Don’t forget, this weekend starting today, June 8th going until Sunday, June 10th is the 2012 Westfest!

The street festival runs all the way from Golden at Richmond to Kirkwood at Richmond. And there are some pretty amazing acts this year including the Hidden Cameras, Steven Page, and the Cooper Brothers. Not to mention spoken word performances, Nepean’s Choir, and performances from the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama. In addition to all these great things, there are street sales galore and the patios will be extended! So obviously you know where you need to be this weekend. Check their website for the schedule and more info.

I’m going tonight and tomorrow, so I hope to see you all there!
