I’m Alive!

, ,

My last post was from the summer. So basically, I’ve moved to Victoria, BC, getting my MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Victoria. I was attempting to start a blog for my time there, but it’s proving difficult. I’m coming back to Ottawa soon for a month for the holidays, and I’m hoping to post some new content on this blog, and possibly start featuring street fashion of Victoria after I go back. We will see.

Thank you to any new twitter or blog followers, I really appreciate you taking interest in the site and I promise you when my life makes a little more sense, content will become  regular.

Thank you to anyone who has e-mailed me about Ottawa fashion related or Westboro/West Wellington related events, I miss the lovely fashion scene Ottawa has going on. If you are interested in me covering anything that is happening between December 5th and January 6th, please send an e-mail to ottawawestfashion@hotmail.ca and I’ll do my best to attend.

That’s it for now. Hopefully more later.

PS My Booster Juice on Wellington closed, wtf! Worked there for almost 5 years, RIP free smoothies.

Westfest 2012!

, , , , , , ,

Don’t forget, this weekend starting today, June 8th going until Sunday, June 10th is the 2012 Westfest!

The street festival runs all the way from Golden at Richmond to Kirkwood at Richmond. And there are some pretty amazing acts this year including the Hidden Cameras, Steven Page, and the Cooper Brothers. Not to mention spoken word performances, Nepean’s Choir, and performances from the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama. In addition to all these great things, there are street sales galore and the patios will be extended! So obviously you know where you need to be this weekend. Check their website for the schedule and more info.

I’m going tonight and tomorrow, so I hope to see you all there!

Anyone else see these amazing signs today?

, , , ,

So walking around the neighbourhood today, specifically along Wellington West in between Parkdale and Smirle Ave, I saw a series of amazing posters:

Whoever put these put is a genius. There was a pretty big cluster around the Bridgehead at Caroline, but they were sadly taken down by mid afternoon. I also saw this adorable sign about a week ago (perhaps the same person?):

Anyone know who is responsible? I’d love to find out…I’m also super tempted to call the listed numbers. Tempted and scared…

Time Kode: Ottawa’s monthly soul shakedown

, , ,

One of Hintonburg’s best bars (and yeah I’m counting it as Hintonburg, it’s on the cusp okay, Sommerset and Preseton). In between running into old friends, dancing to sweet beats on the sweaty, blue lit dance floor, waiting in line for the bar, and grabbing some fresh air, I managed to grab some going out looks fit for the hipster universe:

Stephanie (a friend of a friend). Love the completely spring vibe with this look that comes from using soft colours like the light blue jean and off white blouse. Paired with the hardcore metal necklace and amazing boots makes the outfit perfect for a summer’s night out. The best looks always come off as effortless and this for sure does.

(Wish my Iphone took better pics, my apologies). But this is Charlotte, a fashion intern, working at Cascata Blu, rocking the amazing American Apparel fringe dress, vintage shoes and purse from Toronto.  Here’s the look from the back:

Charlotte was also wearing custom designed pierced silver earrings from Lisa Martin, a local Ottawa jewelry designer.

You can find out more about Lisa’s designs or contact her on her Facebook page, which can be found here.

Overall, good night. See all you crazy hipsters next month.

Happenings: Rent frock Repeat Coming to Ottawa

, , , , , , ,

Rent frock Repeat is a great concept for fashionistas, and for those who are unfamiliar with it I highly recommend you check on their website. Essentially women are able to rent designer pieces, such as Yigal Azrouel, Badgley Mischka, Anna Sui, Jay Godfrey, and Pink Tartan, at a fraction of the price for either 4 or 8 days. If that wasn’t amazing enough, they offer you two sizes, one being free, to ensure the perfect fit for your event. And plus sized girls, don’t fear, they offer many of their pieces in sizes 12, 14, and 16! The website also offers amazing sizing tips as they understand different garments look different on various body types. To rent via the website, all you do is set up an account for free and pick the dress of your choice. Such a lovely idea for getting a top quality dress for an event instead of shelling out hundreds of dollars. I for one will for sure be using this website in the future.

And there is more great news. Rent frock Repeat is heading to Ottawa for their first pop up shop, from April 21-29! You encouraged to drop in from 10am-8pm on those days, and it’s being hosted at Galerie 240, located at 240 Guigues Avenue. As well they will be at the National Women’s Show on April 14th(today! drop what you’re doing and go! You don’t need all day to cry over the Titanic) and 15th, doing a fashion show each day.

After I check out the event I’ll make another post about my experience, and I hope to see all of you there!

Ottawa Fashion Week: Friday February 17 Part 3: Off the Runway

, , , ,

One of things I was most excited about seeing at Ottawa Fashion Week on Friday was what people were wearing off the runway. I was delighted to meet so many nice people, many of whom were also Fashion bloggers to please take the time to check out their sites!

Julia Brucculieri, Capital Oh, Loren Romei, Lo’s Style and Melissa, Life is Always On.

Sabrina Kwan, Sincerely Sabrina, and Laura.

Megan and Crista,  who were working the event.

Erika and Lina and a photographer for an Ottawa based fashion blog (I forgot your name and site, sorry!)

My friends Erika and Lina excited about the show.

Erika, eesypeazyee,  and Lina Crompton, Beyond-Boundingly Forward.

Yours truly rocking Winners (gotta love Winners).

How my feet felt by the end of the night (I don’t do heels well).

Once again, a great experience. I was sad I was only able to attend one night, and look forward to the next one in Fall 2012. It was so nice meeting so many great and new people, and being exposed to truly Canadian and local fashion. Now, off to find that stripped dress…

Take care darlings.

Ottawa Fashion Week: Friday February 17 Part 1: Elena Hinke and Elena’s Creations, Amanda Emmanuel and frAsh

, , , , , , ,

Last night I had the wonderful pleasure of attending my first Ottawa Fashion Week. I had no idea what to expect and I had an amazing time. I have to hand it to every single person involved in the organization of the event, from the designers to the Westin to the planners to the volunteers. It truly was a wonderful event and I hope the rest of the weekend goes just as well.

In these three posts I’ll cover the designers I saw and the general feel of the show from an “outsider’s” (outside of the industry, that is) experience. These posts will not be a great way to feature every look that went down the runway, or trends that are emerging. Rather I’m admiring the various pieces, and the Ottawa Fashion industry as a whole, and reflecting on my unique experience there. Enjoy!

In this post you’ll see my snaps the event featuring from Elena Hinke and Elena’s Creations, Amanda Emmanuel, and frAsh, so let’s get this show started…
